Three teppanyaki izakaya where you can still eat hot food at 2am in Kyoto: Teppan to Osake Soya near Kawaramachi-Matsubara (to 3:00), Crown in Gion (to 3:00, last order 2:30, closed Sundays) and Tetsupan Dojo on Nishi-Kiyamachi, which stays open until 11:00 the next morning.
This is not the wagyu-steak kind of teppanyaki. It is the everyday kind: okonomiyaki, grilled meat and vegetables, egg dishes and a drink, cooked on a hot iron plate. I have eaten at all three. Hours below are checked against each shop’s own website, booking page or Instagram.
Plenty of Kyoto restaurants close early, which can catch visitors out after a long day of temples. If you are staying near Pontocho or Gion, these three are within reach of most central hotels (see where to stay in Kyoto).

Turn on JavaScript to check by night and time. In short: Soya 18:00–3:00 (closes on irregular days), Crown Mon–Sat 18:00–3:00 with last order 2:30 (closed Sundays and public holidays), Tetsupan Dojo 18:00–11:00 the next morning (closed Thursdays).
Which night? (the evening you set out)
Times after midnight count as part of the night you set out. Based on each shop’s posted hours; shops can close early or change hours, so check before a long trip.

Open to 3:00SakeQuieter streetSoya sits on Matsubara-dori just west of Teramachi, a few blocks south of Shijo-dori and about 350m from Kiyomizu-Gojo Station on the Keihan Line. The street is quieter than Kiyamachi, which suits a slower last meal.
Its booking page describes creative dishes built around seasonal vegetables, sours made with seasonal fruit, and a chosen list of sake. Order a few small plates to share, which is how izakaya meals usually work, and ask which sake suits the food.

What to order at a teppanyaki izakaya

- OkonomiyakiA savory cabbage pancake with meat or seafood, finished with sauce and mayonnaise.
- YakisobaStir-fried noodles with pork and vegetables in a sweet-savory sauce.
- Tonpei-yakiPork wrapped in a thin omelet, a classic Kansai bar snack.

Before you go: late-night tips
Check the last order, not just the closing time
Kitchens often stop taking orders 30 minutes or more before closing. Crown, for example, takes last orders at 2:30 and closes at 3:00.
Expect a small table charge
Many izakaya serve a small starter called otoshi and add it to the bill. It is normal, not a scam; ask when you sit down if you want to know the price.
Plan your ride home
Trains and buses stop overnight, so after the last train you will need a taxi or a walk. Keep your hotel’s address in Japanese on your phone.
Keep it quiet outside
Gion and the streets around Kiyamachi sit right next to homes. Keep voices down on the street, especially after midnight.
FAQ
Which teppanyaki izakaya in Kyoto stays open the latest?
Tetsupan Dojo on Nishi-Kiyamachi. Its official website lists hours of 18:00 to 11:00 the next morning, and says the full menu is served right through. It is closed on Thursdays.
Are these places open on Sundays?
Tetsupan Dojo and Teppan to Osake Soya can be. Dojo closes only on Thursdays, and Soya closes on irregular days, so check its Instagram first. Crown in Gion is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
Can I smoke inside?
Crown says on its Instagram that smoking is allowed, so expect smoke there. We could not confirm the smoking policy at Soya or Dojo; restaurants in Japan that allow smoking must post a sign at the entrance.
Can I pay by card?
Tetsupan Dojo’s website says major cards are accepted. We could not confirm card payment at Soya or Crown, so carry enough cash for your meal.
How much does a late-night teppanyaki meal cost?
Soya lists a budget from about ¥3,500 per person on its booking page. At Dojo, single dishes on the official menu run from ¥90 for a skewer to ¥2,800 for a 120g wagyu sirloin. Many izakaya also add a small table charge (otoshi), so ask if you are unsure.
How do I get back to my hotel after 3am?
Kyoto’s subway and city buses do not run through the night, so plan on a taxi after the last trains. Save your hotel’s name and address in Japanese on your phone to show the driver.
