Kyoto Souvenirs: What to Buy and Where (2026 Prices)

What to buy in Kyoto and where, with official 2026 prices, shelf lives and shop hours, and how tax-free shopping works from 1 November 2026.

Kyoto Souvenirs: What to Buy and Where (2026 Prices)

The safest Kyoto souvenirs are dry, light and cheap: hard yatsuhashi (¥648 for 24, keeps 90 days), shichimi spice from Shichimiya Honpo (¥864 for 15g) and Ippodo tea (hojicha bags ¥1,188). Yojiya oil-blotting paper (¥1,960 for 5 booklets) is an easy non-food pick.

Buy fresh sweets last. Soft yatsuhashi keeps about 12 days and Malebranche’s Cha no ka about 15, according to their makers. Matcha was sold out on Ippodo’s online shop when we checked, so have a backup.

Tax-free shopping changes on 1 November 2026. You will pay tax at the till and get it back after a customs check at the airport, before you check in your bags.

Bands use each card’s lowest price; unpriced items show only under “Any”. Cha no ka’s 15 days run from shipment, so the real margin is smaller.

The shortlist, one by one

Yatsuhashi: hard if you are far from home, soft if you are close

Shogoin Yatsuhashi’s baked original (rice flour, sugar, cinnamon) is ¥648 for 24, packed three to a sachet, with a stated 90-day shelf life. Its soft Hijiri is ¥756 for 10 and keeps 12 days, so buy it last. The main shop in Sakyo Ward opens 9:00–18:00; Kyoto Station shops and department stores also sell it.

Shichimi: Kyoto’s chilli blend, from the Kiyomizu-dera approach

Shichimiya Honpo sits where Sannenzaka meets the slope up to Kiyomizu-dera. Its shop lists the 15g pouch at ¥864, the 25g pouch or a tin with pouch at ¥1,080 and a three-tin set at ¥3,780. It opens 9:30–17:30 (varies by season) with no regular closing day. If you are walking Sannenzaka, stop here; otherwise look in JR Kyoto Isetan, Takashimaya, Daimaru or Kyoto Station gift shops.

Tea: Ippodo, with hojicha as a backup

Ippodo’s Kyoto Main Store on Teramachi opens 10:00–17:00 and closes on the second Wednesday of each month. 20g boxes of matcha run from ¥864 (Hatsu-mukashi) and ¥1,512 (Ikuyo-no-mukashi, pitched at beginners) to ¥16,200. On 7 October 2026 every matcha on its online shop was out of stock; we could not confirm store stock. Hojicha bags (8 for ¥1,188) and sencha Hosen (80g, ¥1,944) were available.

Cha no ka: the matcha cookie with a deadline

Malebranche’s Cha no ka is a matcha langue de chat with white chocolate, ¥950 for 5 or ¥2,280 for 12. The maker gives about 15 days from shipment. Its Kiyomizu-zaka shop (9:00–18:00, no regular closing day) sells a shop-only box, and the Kyoto Tower Sando shop opens 10:00–21:00 for last-evening buying.

Yojiya oil-blotting paper

Yojiya’s face blotting paper weighs nothing and cannot spoil: 5 booklets for ¥1,960, 10 for ¥3,900 on its online shop. The Gion main shop (Shijo and Hanamikoji corner) opens 10:30–18:30 on weekdays and to 19:00 at weekends, every day. Branches include the Kiyomizu slopes, Arashiyama, Kinkaku-ji and Kyoto Station.

Incense and scent sachets

Shoyeido’s Kyoto main store, Kunjyukan at Karasuma Nijo, opens 9:00–18:00 and closes only on 1 January. Its online shop lists 150 short sticks of Kyonishiki at ¥800 and hanging scent sachets at ¥950. A sachet is the easier gift: no smoke and no lighter needed.

Splurge or keepsake: tea caddies and tenugui

Kaikado has made handmade metal tea caddies since 1875; its Shimogyo Ward shop opens 9:00–18:00, closed Sundays, Mondays and holidays. Eirakuya (founded 1615) prints tenugui and furoshiki with seasonal designs, with shops in Gion, on Shijo and at Kyoto Station’s Hachijo exit. We found no price list for either, so we quote none.

Tax-free shopping: before and after 1 November 2026

Look for shops with a tax-free sign; Kyoto Porta and Kyoto Tower Sando both offer tax-free shopping. The tax is 10% on most goods and 8% on food and non-alcoholic drink, according to Japan’s National Tax Agency. Most souvenir runs stay under the minimum: at one shop on one day, you need ¥5,000 or more before tax.

Until 31 Oct 2026From 1 Nov 2026
At the tillTax removed when you show your passportYou pay the full price including tax
Minimum¥5,000 before tax¥5,000 before tax, per shop per day
Food and cosmeticsSealed special packaging; up to ¥500,000No special packaging and no upper limit; items used up in Japan are not refunded
RefundNone neededAfter customs inspection at departure, by the shop or its refund agent

How the refund works from 1 November

  1. Buy at a tax-free shop with your passport and pay the tax-inclusive price.
  2. Leave Japan within 90 days of the purchase.
  3. At the airport, before baggage check-in, show your passport at a tax-free terminal with all the goods in hand.
  4. Get the refund from the shop or its agent: bank transfer, credit card, app or cash at the port, depending on the shop.

Two traps

Do not check in a bag that holds tax-free goods before the procedure; the Japan Tourism Agency says you cannot get it back. Shipping purchases home separately has not counted as export since April 2025, so ask the shop about overseas delivery. Whether refund agents deduct a fee was not stated on the official pages we read.

To plan how you will pay at small shops, see how much cash you need in Kyoto.

Packing for the flight

  • Liquids go in the holdHand-luggage liquids from Kansai Airport must be 100 ml or less per container, in one clear resealable bag of up to 1 litre. Duty-free bought after security is the exception.
  • Check the date before you buySoft sweets (12–15 days) are for the last day; baked crackers and dry tea are for the first.
  • Check your home country’s food rulesAustralia, the US, the UK and Canada all set their own import rules for food; declare anything you are unsure about on arrival.

FAQ

What is a classic Kyoto souvenir that will survive the trip home?

Hard (baked) yatsuhashi. Shogoin Yatsuhashi sells 24 pieces for ¥648 and states a 90-day shelf life. Its soft Hijiri keeps 12 days, so buy that at the end of your trip.

Does Japan’s tax-free shopping change in November 2026?

Yes. From 1 November 2026 you pay the tax-inclusive price, pass a customs inspection when you leave Japan within 90 days, and the shop or its refund agent pays the tax back. Until 31 October 2026 the tax is removed at the till, according to the Japan Tourism Agency.

Can I pack tax-free purchases in my checked suitcase?

Not before the tax-free procedure. From 1 November 2026 all tax-free goods must be with you at the tax-free terminal, which is in the departure lobby before baggage check-in. A checked bag cannot be retrieved for the procedure, according to the Japan Tourism Agency.

Is matcha hard to buy in Kyoto right now?

It can be. On 7 October 2026 every matcha on Ippodo’s Japanese online shop was out of stock; we could not confirm store stock. Hojicha and sencha were still listed, from ¥1,188 for 8 hojicha bags.

Where can I buy souvenirs at Kyoto Station early or late?

Kyoto Porta lists its souvenir street (Omiyage Kaido) as open 7:30 to 22:00. Kyoto Tower Sando’s ground-floor souvenir market is open 10:00 to 21:00. Individual shops can keep different hours.

Can I carry sake or soy sauce in my hand luggage?

Only in small amounts. On international flights from Kansai Airport, hand-luggage liquids must be in containers of 100 ml or less in one clear resealable bag of up to 1 litre; duty-free bought after security is exempt. Pack bottles in checked baggage, after any tax-free procedure.

Checked 7 October 2026 against the official sites of Shogoin Yatsuhashi, Shichimiya Honpo, Ippodo Tea, Malebranche, Yojiya, Shoyeido, Kaikado, Eirakuya, Kyoto Porta, Kyoto Tower Sando, Shinpuhkan and Nishiki Market, the Japan Tourism Agency’s tax-free refund pages, the National Tax Agency and Kansai International Airport. Prices are the shops’ own tax-included prices; Shoyeido’s online prices did not state whether tax is included.
